Many top international catamaran sailors will compete in the Vistra Hobie Asian Championship (HAC) 2014 to be held on 18 -19 October in Hong Kong.
As the 20th year that such an international event has been organized by the Hong Kong Hobie Club (HKHC), this is an important anniversary for Hong Kong’s thriving catamaran scene.
The line-up includes 2007 Hobie 16 world champion and 2011 Australian champion Mick Butler who is currently ranked #2 in Australia. Returning to defend his title as Asian Champion will be two-times Asian Games winner, Asian Sailing Champion 2014, and multiple Thai national champion Damrongsak Vongtim.
They will compete against other international teams as well as Hong Kong’s strong local fleet led by national Hobie 16 sailors Tong Shing and Kit Tong. With so much local and international talent on the water, the racing is expected to be fiercely competitive and visually thrilling.
Says Mick Butler, “the Hong Kong Hobie Club is a real oasis in the city, a great sailing club with lots of strong local talent.” Running in tandem with Vistra HAC on both days will be the IAE Open Catamaran Cup which – as its name suggests – is open to all other sports catamarans, mainly spinnaker-flying F18s and F17s.
To be held near Tai Tam Bay, the event will feature a series of geometric courses. A full program of social events including beachside barbeques will be laid on for sailors and guests.
Says Hong Kong Hobie Club Commodore Peter Frauchiger, “it is always exciting to organize this yearly event. Having such top teams from around the world competing and fighting out the championship on the back of our 20th race anniversary makes it even more special!”
Places will be available on the club’s support boats for news media wishing to take their own photos or footage during the two days. The event is jointly sponsored by Vistra Hong Kong, provider of trust, fiduciary, corporate and fund services; and the Institute of Accountants Exchange (IAE).
Located on To Tei Wan Beach in Tai Tam Bay, the Hong Kong Hobie Club has a diverse membership of local and expat sailors of all ages. Open to anyone who wants to sail Hobie Cats, the club offers a low-cost, grass roots approach to sailing and a welcoming community of enthusiastic sailors who race regularly.
